Paris Fashion Week vs Haute Couture Week is easiest to understand through the official calendars.
Both take place in Paris and can look similar from the street, but they are separate events organized within the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode ecosystem, with different schedules and types of collections.
For a visitor or photographer outside the shows, the distinction matters because it changes the calendar, the houses involved and the rhythm around the venues.
Paris Fashion Week

Paris Fashion Week includes the official ready-to-wear calendars for womenswear and menswear at different times of the year.
Outside the major shows, buyers, editors, influencers, personalities, drivers, photographers, fans and people passing through can all move through the same area.
That creates the fast, mixed street environment usually associated with Fashion Week arrivals and street style.
For current dates, see the official Paris Fashion Week calendar.
Haute Couture Week

Haute Couture Week is a separate official calendar.
It takes place twice a year, in January and July.
The official calendar includes the couture houses and invited participants recognized within the FHCM structure.
For current dates, see the official Haute Couture Week calendar.
Paris Fashion Week vs Haute Couture Week: what changes outside the shows
Couture can attract a different mix of clients, personalities, editors and media.
You may see more formal looks, dramatic silhouettes, rare pieces, jewelry and stronger evening influence during daytime arrivals.
That does not mean one is always calmer or more crowded than the other. The atmosphere changes from venue to venue and from house to house.
Ready-to-wear Fashion Week often has a broader street-style mix because the calendar is larger and the audiences around the shows are more varied.
The calendar is smaller, but not necessarily calmer
A shorter official couture calendar does not automatically mean an easier working day.
Major couture houses can attract large crowds around arrivals, and the entrance area can become just as compressed as a large ready-to-wear show.
What I label on my site
I keep the distinction simple:
- Paris Fashion Week for ready-to-wear Fashion Week coverage.
- Haute Couture for Haute Couture Week coverage.
You can browse both from the main Fashion Week photography archive.
Examples from my Haute Couture coverage
My archive includes Haute Couture coverage from houses such as Viktor&Rolf, Balenciaga and Robert Wun.
Use the main Fashion Week archive to open the current show pages and guest coverage.
What stays the same
Whether it is ready-to-wear or couture, the outside-show photography problem is similar: limited time, uncontrolled backgrounds, fast movement, changing light and crowds.
That is why the skills overlap even when the calendars are different.
